Air Separation Unit Insulation Removal and Remediation via Ropes Access, Specialist Gas Facility

Wescott completed this highly specialised project through strategic planning of a mix of access disciplines in order to gain effective entry into the vertical air separation unit, allowing detection and remediation to occur. The project was completed to time and with impeccable safety record.

Scope of Work:

  • Air Separation Unit had been offline due to a drop in Nitrogen pressure loss.
  • Wescott was contracted to remove 40tonne of Rockwool insulation from within the unit to be able to access, identify and remediate.
  • The project was CSE (Confined Space Entry)
  • Full Breathing Apparatus was required
  • The removal process was completed solely using IRATA Rope Access procedures
  • Wescott was contracted to provide a Rescue Coordination and Confined Space Standby Team to oversee the safe entry of other contractors
  • Wescott was awarded the ‘turnkey’ to carry out the complete scope of works, negating the need for internal scaffolding
  • Wescott Rescue and Access Team worked with AISS providing IRATA Technician Assisted Rope Access, enabling AISS accessibility to safely carry out Ultrasonic Gas Detection Survey
  • AISS successfully detected the internal vessel leak and provided comprehensive reporting allowing Air Liquide’s International Engineer Team to provide the methodology for repair
  • Wescott Australia’s multi-disciplined team of professionals successfully carried out the Stainless Steel vessel weld repairs, Dye Penetrant Testing
  • Wescott Australia Team completed corrosion mitigation, Cold Box plate-weld repairs and protective coatings works in preparation for the client to get the unit back online.
