Wescott completed this highly specialised project through strategic planning of a mix of access disciplines in order to gain effective entry into the vertical air separation unit, allowing detection and remediation to occur. The project was completed to time and with impeccable safety record.

Scope of Work:

Air Separation Unit had been offline due to a drop in Nitrogen pressure loss.
Wescott was contracted to remove 40tonne of Rockwool insulation from within the unit to be able to access, identify and remediate.
The project was CSE (Confined Space Entry)
	Full Breathing Apparatus was required
The removal process was completed solely using IRATA Rope Access procedures
Wescott was contracted to provide a Rescue Coordination and Confined Space Standby Team to oversee the safe entry of other contractors
Wescott was awarded the ‘turnkey’ to carry out the complete scope of works, negating the need for internal scaffolding
Wescott Rescue and Access Team worked with AISS providing IRATA Technician Assisted Rope Access, enabling AISS accessibility to safely carry out Ultrasonic Gas Detection Survey
AISS successfully detected the internal vessel leak and provided comprehensive reporting allowing Air Liquide’s International Engineer Team to provide the methodology for repair
Wescott Australia’s multi-disciplined team of professionals successfully carried out the Stainless Steel vessel weld repairs, Dye Penetrant Testing
Wescott Australia Team completed corrosion mitigation, Cold Box plate-weld repairs and protective coatings works in preparation for the client to get the unit back online.

Wescott Successfully Completes Challenging Shutdown Works

Wescott recently completed a challenging project involving the removal and replacement of over 20 tonnes of absorption media and a thorough internal vessel inspection. The project was completed on time and within budget, and the client was extremely satisfied with the results.

The project involved the use of specialised equipment and techniques, and the Wescott team was able to successfully complete the project with Zero LTI.

Location: Specialist Gas Facility, Altona, VIC
Engineering: Wescott’s in-house Engineer defined the scope, methodology and worked alongside the client for a complete remediation solution leading up to the execution phase.
Materials: Absorption Media, SS Filtering mesh, gaskets, high-tensile mild steel bolts & washers, custom fabricated replacement venturi sheet metal cone and funnel system created in Wescott’s steel fabrication workshop to assist with the media replacement.
Execution Team: 5 highly skilled IRATA rope access technicians trained in CSE Access, Rescue & Emergency Response.

Wescott's team was tasked with removing and replacing all insulation media and process piping for the purifier vessels. This bespoke project presented several challenges, especially regarding access to the vessels. Access was achieved by CSE Rope Access trained technicians through the access hatch at the top. Pipes were removed, and all corrosion defects inside the vessels were remediated before reinstating all pipes with new gasket seals after media replacement was completed.

Wescott removed the large process pipe sections with a 70-tonne crane to gain internal access to the units. Using Vacuload Series 4/Interceptor Recovery Unit and custom-fabricated fit-to-measure equipment, the CSE team removed up to 23 tons combined of Molecular Sieve and Alumina Oxide absorption media before completing a thorough internal vessel inspection for signs of corrosion or damage. This information was reported to the client's engineering team in real-time. Wescott refilled the units with new media and handled waste management and disposal.

As the principal contractor, Wescott coordinated and contracted all necessary resources, including stainless steel mesh, scaffolding, cranes, high-risk EWP, rigging, CSE rescue operations, and worked around the SIMOPS and installation team to remove and replace decommissioned valves to the Purifier units.

Wescott was engaged by Santos to remediate damage to RLPG storage tanks at their Port Bonython Hydrocarbon plant. Santos had gone to market in order to find an innovative means of safely and efficiently accessing the top strake of cladding which had been compromised by native bird life. Wescott deployed a small team of multi-disciplined operatives whom completed the project on ropes access via the V Deck suspended platform. The works included the removal, blast and paint, and reinstallation of insulation and cladding.

A hugely successful series of projects, Wescott and Santos together won the SA Premiers Award for Innovation and Safety for the scope, and were successful in saving and relocating endangered wildlife in the process.
