Wescott Uses Innovative Suspended Deck System to Remediate CUI on RLPG Tank

The suspended deck system we use is up to 80% more cost-effective, 5x lighter, and 75% less bulky than traditional scaffolding. It also offers a higher factor of safety, reducing the risk of accidents and improving the quality of work. This system is designed to withstand high winds and heavy loads, making it a reliable solution for accessing hard-to-reach areas.

Wescott, a leading provider of industrial services, recently used an innovative suspended deck system to remediate corrosion under insulation (CUI) on a large RLPG tank. The traditional approach of building stick/modular scaffold to access the top of the tank did not align with Santos' transformation process, and the latest technology (FLIR camera infrared imaging, non-intrusive pulsed eddy current) were not suitable to quantify CUI. The only option was to innovate and find an alternative solution.

Wescott's solution was to install a suspended deck platform around the perimeter of the tank. The suspended deck is a high strength and low weight platform that can be installed by a 4-Person Rope Access Team. The system is also inspected on a weekly basis as per Temporary Works Regulations. A variety of containment systems can be installed to capture all debris generated by the works and can be adjusted as required.

The use of the suspended deck system provided significant safety and cost advantages to the client. The system is up to 80% lighter and 75% less voluminous than traditional scaffolding, which reduces the load on the structure and improves efficiency of access. The system also reduces manual handling, the wind load on the structure and system, transport logistics, and storage of product on site. Additionally, the suspended deck system improves the quality of work, extends the life of assets, reduces dropped objects risk, withstands high winds, takes heavy loads, and has a higher in-built safety.

Wescott is proud to have used an innovative solution to remediate CUI on this RLPG tank. The suspended deck system is a safe, efficient, and cost-effective solution that can be used on a variety of projects.

Shutdown Works Completed Successfully

We recently completed a challenging project involving the removal and replacement of over 20 tonnes of absorption media and conducted a thorough internal vessel inspection, all while handling waste management and coordinating all necessary resources.

Location: Specialist Gas Facility, Altona, VIC
	Date: Christmas Shutdown 28th Dec 22 – 07th Jan 23
	Duration: 10 Days
Wescott: Principal Contractor / Turnkey project management
Engineering: Wescott’s in-house Engineer defined the scope, methodology and worked alongside the client for a complete remediation solution leading up to the execution phase.
Materials: Absorption Media, SS Filtering mesh, gaskets, high-tensile mild steel bolts & washers, custom fabricated replacement venturi sheet metal cone and funnel system created in Wescott’s steel fabrication workshop to assist with the media replacement.
Execution Team: 5 highly skilled IRATA rope access technicians trained in CSE Access, Rescue & Emergency Response.

Wescott's team was tasked with removing and replacing all insulation media and process piping for the purifier vessels. This bespoke project presented several challenges, especially regarding access to the vessels. Access was achieved by CSE Rope Access trained technicians through the access hatch at the top. Pipes were removed, and all corrosion defects inside the vessels were remediated before reinstating all pipes with new gasket seals after media replacement was completed.

Wescott removed the large process pipe sections with a 70-tonne crane to gain internal access to the units. Using Vacuload Series 4/Interceptor Recovery Unit and custom-fabricated fit-to-measure equipment, the CSE team removed up to 23 tons combined of Molecular Sieve and Alumina Oxide absorption media before completing a thorough internal vessel inspection for signs of corrosion or damage. This information was reported to the client's engineering team in real-time. Wescott refilled the units with new media and handled waste management and disposal.

As the principal contractor, Wescott coordinated and contracted all necessary resources, including stainless steel mesh, scaffolding, cranes, high-risk EWP, rigging, CSE rescue operations, and worked around the SIMOPS and installation team to remove and replace decommissioned valves to the Purifier units.

It’s the small wins that add up which ultimately help save our uniquely Australian fauna and flora, and Wescott are very proud to have played their part on a recent project in regional SA.

Working on the remediation of an RLPG Tank, of which the cladding, insulation and tank wall itself had been compromised by local birdlife, Wescott operatives found themselves face to face with the native creatures, who had somewhat claimed squatters’ rights.

The native birds – baby Kestrel Hawks, Galahs (baby pink and grey cockatoos) and Blackbirds, were carefully removed by the crew and handed over to local Wildlife Rescue.

Andrew from Wildlife Rescue Whyalla educated the crew and plant staff on the birds and the process to relocate them. The Hawks will be released into the wild - there isn’t a large presence of these species in the wilderness and he was overwhelmed and looking forward to preparing them for release. He said, “they will be fed mice and minced meat - the mince must not contain any preservatives as this will kill the birds, however, it needs nutrition added for the birds to survive.” Andrew got quite emotional when he saw the birds knowing that his efforts and contribution to wildlife will be rewarded by being able to save them.

Needless to say, this feel good story got plaudits from Wildlife Authorities, and reflects Wescott’s values and dedication to protecting and conserving the environment.
